As an avid traveler, I would love to live in a world where travel restrictions don’t exist and people are able to visit all of the beautiful places in this world without having to jump thru a bunch of hoops. With the news coming out last week about new travel restrictions for Americans visiting Cuba, and news earlier this year that the EU will be requiring a new electronic authorization for many countries starting in 2020, it was a pleasant surprise to hear this week that Brazil will be further reducing its Visa requirements for a select number of countries.
Starting on June 17, 2019 citizens from the United States, Japan, Australia, and Canada will no longer require a Visa to travel to Brazil. The Brazilian government announced this week that, in addition to Americans, citizens from Australia, Japan, and Canada will also no longer need a Visa to enter the country. Up until then, travelers from these countries will still be required to obtain an electronic Visa for $40 USD before visiting.
This move is part of a series of moves from the Brazilian government in recent years to try and draw more tourists to the country. Last year, Brazil introduced an eVisa that made the Visa application process much easier for tourists and dropped the price of a Visa from $160 USD to just $40 USD. This lead to 2018 being a record tourism year for Brazil and the government wants to continue that momentum.
Personally, I think that this is fantastic news and I really hope that we see other countries follow Brazil’s lead and start to reduce the impediments to travel. With terrorism still a threat in many parts of the world, it is understandable that security needs to be heightened, but I also think that this can be accomplished without making the process for foreigners to visit burdensome.
