Today was one of the most exciting and exhilarating days of adventure that I have had in my many years of travel. I came into this year with the personal goal to really start ramping up my adventures, and today’s climb of Grays and Torreys Peaks did not disappoint.

It was one of the most difficult hikes that I have done and the fact that it is rated as one of the easiest fourteeners in Colorado just shows how much further I have to go to meet my goals. Little-by-little, step-by-step, just like how I made it to these amazing peaks today.

Grays and Torreys Peak

We got up early this morning so that the guys could drop me off at the trailhead. As I was the only person who would be doing the hike, they would come back and get me in the afternoon. Almost immediately, the adventure began as the 3 mile drive to the trailhead was really rough and rocky. Thankfully, our RV was equipped to handle it. However, after dropping me off at the trailhead it was decided that it would be pressing our luck to make the drive again to come back and get me, so the plan was to pick me up at the start of the road when I finished. Nothing I couldn’t handle, but it added over three miles to my hike.

The hike itself started out as a very gradual climb thru the valley, but then quickly steepened about half way into the climb. The last half-mile or so was essentially a steep rock scramble to the summit. I would say the hardest part of the climb for me was the altitude. You really lose your breath quite quickly. This is especially true if you are coming from Wisconsin’s low altitude like myself. Overall, it was exactly the experience I wanted it to be. A very difficult climb that would push me to my limit and help me grow as an adventurer, a traveler, and as a person.
