From the vibrant streets of Barcelona to the stunning beaches of the Costa del Sol and the majestic architecture of Madrid, Spain has it all.

Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or an adventure seeker, Spain has an abundance of attractions and activities to suit every taste. Join me as I embark on a virtual journey through this mesmerizing country, discovering the must-see destinations that make Spain a top travel destination.
The Sagrada Familia
Barcelona

Out of all of the places to see in Spain, the top destination in my mind is undoubtedly the incredible Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Otherwise known as the Barcelona Cathedral, the Sagrada Familia is the masterpiece of legendary architect and designer Antoni Gaudi. In my opinion, it is one of the most unique and beautiful cathedrals in the world.
The cathedral has the distinction of being the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world. While Gaudi himself got involved in the design and construction of the church all the way back in 1914, it isn’t estimated to be completed until the year 2026. Once complete, it will have taken ten times longer than the Great Pyramids, 123 years longer than the Taj Mahal, and 50 years longer than the Great Wall of China to build.
Gaudi has many masterpieces in Barcelona, another of which I cover in this article. However, the breathtakingly beautiful Sagrada Familia is without a doubt his crowning achievement. If you like beautiful architecture and pretty churches, it is an absolute must-add to your bucket list.
The Alhambra of Granada
Granada

Another structure that one should not miss when visiting Spain is the incredible Alhambra of Granada. Not only is it one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture in the world, but it is also one of the most breathtaking buildings in all of Europe. This palace-fortress complex is so big and so beautiful that it will literally leave you speechless when you see it.
The palace has a wealth of spectacular gardens, which are connected by tree-lined walkways. Alongside the paths are meandering streams that fill the courtyards with the sound of trickling water. Scattered within these beautiful courtyards are elaborate fountains, each more stunning than the next.
When you visit, make sure to check out the Courtyard of the Lions. Without a doubt, it is the most beautiful of the palace’s courtyards. I also suggest making a trip to the top of the La Vela Tower. From here, you will be treated with some of the best views of the Alhambra. After touring this amazing place, I have no doubt that you will agree that it is one of the top places to see in Spain.
Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba
Córdoba

Also referred to as the Mezquita of Córdoba, the Great Mosque of Córdoba is one of Spain’s most important historical sites. This also makes it one of the top places to see in Spain. The beautiful Cathedral, turned mosque, turned back into a cathedral was believed to have been built nearly 2,000 years ago. It is said that the temple’s construction was on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to the Roman God Janus.
A Blend of Cultures
When the city of Córdoba fell into Moorish rule, the cathedral was converted into a breathtaking Mosque. In fact, the city’s Moorish rulers had visions of making the mosque so beautiful it would rival the great mosques of Damascus and Baghdad. They accomplished the goal of building one of the most beautiful mosques in the world, but it wouldn’t stay under Moorish control.
When Córdoba fell to Ferdinand the 3rd in 1538, the structure was converted into the cathedral that you see today. Because of its many influences, it is one of the most beautiful and unique cathedrals in the world. If you are planning to visit Spain in the future, I would make sure the amazing city of Córdoba is on your itinerary.

Festival of San Fermín
Pamplona

In addition to the many incredible places to see in Spain, the country also has several festivals that are considered can’t-miss events. Arguably the most famous of these is the amazing San Fermín Festival. Held annually in the city of Pamplona, Navarre, Spain, this week-long festival is highlighted by the “running of the bulls”. This tradition was made famous in the English-speaking world by famed author Ernest Hemingway, who lived parts of his later years in Spain.
While thousands of people travel to Pamplona each year to risk their lives for the thrill of running with the bulls, this isn’t the only aspect of the celebration. The festivities typically start on July 6 with a large fireworks display and wrap up on July 14th with the singing of the popular song “Pobre de mí”. Over these nine days, festival participants will dress in the traditional red and white costumes and celebrate. It is, without a doubt, one of the most amazing cultural festivals in the world.
The Royal Palace
Madrid

No visit to Spain is complete without seeing the incredible capital city of Madrid. In my opinion, it is one of the top places to see in Spain because of incredible sites like the Royal Palace of Madrid. Not only is it the largest functioning royal palace in Europe, but it is also one of the continent’s most breathtaking structures.
However, the site wasn’t always home to the palace we see today. Before the 18th century, it was home to the incredible Alcázar of Madrid. This medieval fortress was converted into a palace, which Philip II made the official residence of Spain in 1561. Unfortunately, the Alcázar was destroyed by a fire on Christmas Even in 1734. From the ashes of this disaster, the amazing Royal Palace of Madrid that we see today was born.
Not only is the current palace incredibly beautiful, but it is also enormous. Covering over 135,000 square meters of floor space with 3,418 rooms, it is an absolute marvel to behold. Catedral de Santiago de Compostela
Galicia

Undoubtedly, one of the top places to see in Spain for any visitor is the incredible Catedral de Santiago de Compostela. Located in Galicia, this breathtaking cathedral is the reputed burial place of Saint James the Great, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. Each year, millions of visitors come to the cathedral on pilgrimage to pay their respects to Saint James. In fact, it is the final point for many pilgrims who walk or cycle the Camino de Santiago.
One of the most popular traditions when visiting the cathedral is to hug the apostle. While this tradition was temporarily suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has resumed. From 10:30am until the church closes at 9pm, visitors can enter the dressing room of the Apostle Santiago. Here, you can hug the statue of Saint James give thanks, and ask for his blessings.
If you have the opportunity, I strongly recommend participating. It is a humbling and very moving tradition. Even if you aren’t overly religious, it is hard not to be in awe at the beauty of this Cathedral and its spectacular history. It is worth visiting if you are planning a trip to Spain soon.
Plaza de España
Seville

While the Andalusia region of Southern Spain is full of incredible things to see, one of the top destinations in the area is the beautiful city of Seville. Not only is the city the birthplace of Spanish tapas and Flamenco, but it is also home to one of the most beautiful plazas in Spain.
Designed by níbal González for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, the breathtaking Plaza de España is almost too beautiful for words. The plaza is decorated with over 7,000 colorful ceramic tiles that depict important historical events in Spanish literature and mythology.
Criss-crossing the plaza are romantic waterways with beautiful bridges. It is the perfect place to spend a peaceful afternoon or plan a romantic escape. Visitors can take a romantic boat ride through the canals or a carriage ride through the plaza. It is certainly a romantic experience you won’t soon forget.

Mallorca
Balearic Islands

While mainland Spain has a wealth of attractions for visitors to see, some of the most incredible places to see in Spain reside off of its coast. There are several popular island chains off the coast of Spain and the beautiful Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean are one of them. The most popular island in the chain is the incredible island of Mallorca.
Mallorca is an absolute paradise, renowned for its stunning beach resorts, calm water coves, and beautiful limestone mountains. While most visitors spend most of their time on the island’s many soft golden sand beaches, the capital city of Palma is known for its amazing nightlife and incredible shopping.
Whether you are enjoying a boat ride through the island’s crystal blue waters, enjoying some sun and sand on the beach, or delighting in one of the island’s many Michelin-star restaurants, there is never a dull moment when you visit Mallorca.
Puente Nuevo in Ronda
Ronda

If you are a fan of the series “Game of Thrones”, then you will absolutely love the stunning city of Ronda in Southern Spain. Built upon a narrow chasm that splits the city, the historic and stunning town of Ronda looks like it was lifted right out of an episode of the show. You couldn’t imagine a more breathtaking landscape for a city if you tried.
One of the most iconic landmarks in this amazing city is the Puente Nuevo (or new bridge). This is the newest of two bridges that cross the deep El Tajo canyon and is one of the most photographed landmarks in Ronda. From the bridge, you can view the beautiful ledged gardens and the stunning valley below. It is certainly one of the most incredible views you will find in the country, which is why it made my list of the top places to see in Spain.

The Concha Bay
San Sebastian

Spain has a lot of incredible coastlines to boast about, but my favorite spot is undoubtedly Concha Bay in San Sebastian. It is one of the country’s most visited and most photographed stretches of coastline for great reason. With soft white sand and crystal blue waters, it is widely considered to be one of the top city beaches in all of Europe.
One of the most unique features of Concha Bay is the breathtaking Isla Santa Clara. Very few coastal cities have a stunning island in the middle of their bay. And the island itself is incredible to visit. It has a wide range of services available to visitors, including a bar, terrace, and even a natural swimming pool with seawater. Best of all, during the autumn and spring low tides, you can actually walk from San Sebastian out to the island.
Park Güell
Barcelona

What started out as a plan for a residential park that would house sixty single-family homes instead turned into one of the world’s most popular city parks. Of course, I am talking about the infamous Parc Güell in Barcelona, which was the brainchild of famed Spanish designer Antoni Gaudí. Even though it never became what he originally envisioned, it remains one of his most colorful and beautiful designs.
As you walk through the park, you can’t help but be swept up in the whimsical fun of the design. Arches spring out of the ground, decorated by the most beautiful array of ceramic tiles. Meanwhile, an entire forest of fluted columns comes together to create the covered market, which is the centerpiece of the park. Surrounded by one continuous bench, it is a great place to people-watch.
One of the highlights of the park is Guide’s own house. That’s right, the famed designer had a residence in the park, which you can still view to this day. With so many beautiful things to see, there is no doubt that the famed Parc Güell is one of the top places to see in Spain. It certainly is a can’t-miss spot if you are visiting Barcelona.

In fact, it is one of the most incredible historical sites in all of Spain. Standing at 92 feet tall and roughly 244 feet long, it is one of the most impressive Roman aqueducts to have survived until today.
These meticulous engineering marvels utilize a precise incline that ensures water runs at the right speed from its source to the city it supplies with water. What makes Segovia’s aqueduct so unique, in addition to its size, is that it worked all the way until the 19th century. Even more surprising is that the whole structure contains no mortar to hold it together. That’s right, it is just balance and balance alone, that keeps this incredible engineering marvel upright.

This architectural marvel, also known as La Seu, stands as a symbol of the city and is a breathtaking example of Gothic design. The grandeur of the cathedral’s interior, with its soaring columns and intricate stained-glass windows, leaves a lasting impression on visitors.
Its location in the heart of the city overlooking the Mediterranean Sea adds to the overall ambiance. It is almost impossible to visit Mallorca and not notice the breathtaking golden sandstone of the building. Not only is it beautiful, but it is also one of Europe’s tallest Gothic structures.
