Take a Day Hike in the Amazon Rainforest

Day Hike in the Amazon

If you like adventure, one of the most adventurous things to do near Manaus is take a hike in the Amazon Rainforest. If you are a little nervous about venturing into this dense wilderness, let me put your mind at ease. There are many local guides, often from indigenous communities, that offer guided hiking tours through the rainforest. Growing up in the forest, these guides know the area and the forest like the back of their hands.

As you hike through this pristine wilderness, they will share their profound knowledge of the forest, revealing the medicinal properties of various plants and the intricate relationships between species. You will learn about the delicate balance of this ecosystem and the importance of conservation efforts to protect it. For those who want to experience the wild side of the Amazon, I cannot recommend an Amazon Rainforest hiking tour strongly enough.

See the Meeting of the Waters

Meeting of the Waters in the Amazon

One of the most unique Amazon experiences that I outline in this Manaus, Brazil guide is a visit to the Meeting of the Waters. This breathtaking natural phenomenon occurs when the dark waters of the Rio Negro converge with the sandy-colored waters of the Amazon River. The two rivers flow side by side for several kilometers without mixing due to their differing temperatures, speeds, and densities.

Many tour operators in Manaus will take you on a boat tour to get an up-close experience of this natural wonder, often accompanied by knowledgeable guides who share insights into the local flora and fauna. The area is teeming with life, from exotic birds to playful river dolphins, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. It is definitely a can’t-miss experience for anyone visiting Manaus.

Swim with the Pink Amazon River Dolphins

Swim with the Pink Amazon River Dolphins

One of the most enchanting experiences available to visitors to Manaus is the opportunity to swim with the majestic river dolphins that inhabit the Amazon River. These playful creatures, known for their intelligence and curiosity, provide a unique interaction that allows visitors to immerse themselves in the stunning natural beauty of the region while creating lasting memories.

There are multiple different places where you can swim with these gentle creatures, and I have marked the two most popular locations on my map above. To get to these spots, you will need to book a tour that originates in Manaus. Many tours that stop to allow you to swim with the dolphins also include other activities that are on my list of the top things to see and do in Manaus. For more information on tours, please see the Recommended Tours in Manaus, Brazil section below.

Take a Guided Tour of the Teatro Amazonas

The Amazon Theatre

One of the most underrated things to do in my Manaus, Brazil guide is a tour of the spectacular Teatro Amazonas. Otherwise known as the Amazon Theatre, this stunning opera house was built during the rubber boom in the late 19th century. Known for its beauty, this architectural gem showcases a blend of Renaissance and Neoclassical styles, adorned with intricate details and vibrant colors.

Guided tours offer fascinating insights into the history of the theater, its significance in the arts, and the various performances that have graced its stage over the years.

Go Fishing for Pirahna

Fishing for Pirahna in the Amazon

One of the experiences that I enjoyed the most when visiting Manaus was getting out on the river and fishing for piranha. There are several guides in the Manaus area that include time on the river fishing for these iconic fish. Believe me, it is an experience you won’t soon forget. The excitement of reeling in a piranha, known for its sharp teeth and fierce reputation, adds an adventurous twist to any adventure on the Amazon River.

Pirahna in the Amazon

I think you will find that the fishing experience is a bit different from how most fishing is done for other species of fish. To start, your guide will slap the water at the edge of the river, a sign to the piranha that a small animal may have fallen into the water and is struggling.

Then, you will dangle a piece of meat on a hook into the water and wait for the piranha to attack. When they do, you only have an instant to set the hook before your bait is gone. Believe me, it is much more difficult than it sounds. However, when you do catch one of these incredible fish and get to see it up close, the experience is rewarding beyond words.

See the Giant Lily Pads at Janauari Lake

Giant Lily Pads at Janauari Lake

One of the more overlooked things to do that I cover in my Manaus, Brazil guide is visiting the Janauari Lake to see the giant lily pads. These remarkable aquatic plants, known as Victoria Amazonica, can grow up to three meters in diameter, providing a stunning visual contrast against the serene waters of the lake. Not only that, but they serve as a habitat for various wildlife, including fish and birds.

If you would like to visit Janauari Lake, it is best to visit Manaus during the wet season when the river level is higher. During this time of year, the remote lake is reachable by boat from the Rio Negro River. Several local tour guides have tours that visit the lake during the wet season, some of which I recommend in my Recommended Tours in Manaus, Brazil section below.

Search for Caiman at Night

Searching for Caiman at Night

For travelers looking for a little adventure, one of the top things I can suggest in the Manaus area is to take a tour to look for wild caiman at night. As the sun sets and the jungle comes alive with the sounds of nocturnal creatures, guided tours offer a unique opportunity to witness these fascinating reptiles in their natural habitat.

With the moonlight reflecting off the waters of the Amazon River, you’ll navigate through the dense foliage, armed with flashlights to spot the glowing eyes of caimans lurking in the shadows. If you’re lucky, you will get a close-up look at one of these incredible creatures. During my tour, our guide was actually able to reach in and bring a small caiman out of the water for us to look at and touch. It was a surreal experience I will never forget.

Visit an Indigenous village in the Amazon

Indigenous Village in the Amazon

For those who love to learn about the local culture when you travel, you won’t want to miss out on visiting an indigenous village while in Manaus. Not only will a visit to an indigenous village provide a glimpse into their traditional way of life, but it will also allow you to experience their customs, art, and daily activities. All of this while surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Amazonian landscape.

During your visit, you will have a chance to watch cultural songs and dances, shop for crafts created by the members of the indigenous village, and learn about their way of life. Several local tour operators will bring you to visit an Indigenous village that is just a short boat ride from Manaus, so please be sure to check the Recommended Tours in Manaus, Brazil section of this guide for details.

Tour the Cathedral of Manaus

Metropolitan Cathedral of Manaus

When visiting the city, one of the top attractions in the city is the stunning Cathedral of Manaus. This architectural gem, known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Conception, showcases a remarkable blend of neo-Gothic and Romanesque styles. Constructed in the late 19th century during the rubber boom, this iconic structure not only serves as a place of worship but also as a symbol of the city’s prosperity.

Its striking façade, adorned with intricate details and towering spires, invites visitors to step inside and experience the serene atmosphere. If you decide to visit the cathedral, make sure you get a tour of the inside. The interior is equally captivating, featuring beautiful stained glass windows that cast colorful light across the nave, creating a peaceful ambiance perfect for reflection and admiration.

Learn About the Mighty Arapaima Fish

Fishing for Arapaima in the Amazon

One of the more unique things to do that I cover in this Manaus, Brazil guide is visiting the interesting Flutuante do Pirarucu. This floating fish farm and restaurant offer visitors an amazing opportunity to get a close-up view of the iconic arapaima fish of the Amazon. Also referred to as pirarucu, this majestic fish is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world.

To be honest, there is a seemingly unlimited amount of incredible things to see and do around this city, but I can’t cover them all in this guide. These additional four attractions are rather special, so I felt they were worth mentioning here.

The Palacio Rio Negro

This magnificent palace, once the residence of the governor, features exquisite architecture and lush gardens. The heart of the Amazon Rainforest isn’t where you’d expect to find a stunning beach, but that is exactly what you will find when you visit the beautiful Ponta Negra Beach. With the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, the beach attracts locals and tourists alike. From sunbathing to watersports to a nice meal at one of the many nearby restaurants, Ponta Negra Beach is a great place to unwind after a busy day exploring the Amazon.

MUSA Amazonian Museum and Observation Tower

Best Times to Visit Manaus, Brazil

Boating in the Brazilian Amazon
Tributary of the Rio Negro in the dry season. During the wet season, this whole area is underwater.

One of the most important decisions you must make when planning your trip to Manaus is when to visit. Like most places, certain times of year are better than others. To help you decide what time of year to plan your trip, I have included some important annual weather information for you to review in my Manaus, Brazil guide below.

Average Temperature (°F)

One factor that you will want to take into consideration when deciding when to visit Manaus is the temperature. The temperature and humidity vary a little by month, but it is generally very hot and humid in the Brazilian Amazon year-round. The average temperature in Manaus typically hovers around a pleasant 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (75 to 87 degrees Fahrenheit). If you are going to be out and about exploring the Amazon River, touring the city, or taking part in guided jungle tours, it is critical to stay hydrated.

Average Rainfall (Inches)

One of the most important factors to consider when deciding when to visit the Brazilian Amazon in Manaus is the amount of rainfall. Even more than the amount of rainfall you might get during your visit, the water level of the Amazon River will significantly impact which activities are and are not available to you.

The dry season in Manaus runs from June to November. During these months, visitors can enjoy pleasant temperatures and reduced rainfall, making it perfect for outdoor activities and excursions into the nearby Amazon rainforest. The dry season makes it easier to access certain attractions, including the famous Meeting of the Waters, where the dark waters of the Rio Negro meet the sandy-colored waters of the Amazon River.

In contrast, the rainy season, which spans from December to May, brings higher humidity and frequent downpours. While this period may deter some travelers, it also presents a unique opportunity to visit certain places that are less accessible during the dry season. For instance, the incredible giant lily pads in the infamous Janauari Lake are only reachable when the Amazon River level is high and the lake is accessible by canoe from the river.

Best Months to Visit Manaus, Brazil

While the best time to visit Manaus, Brazil is ultimately dependent on what you are visiting to do, some periods of the year are generally better than others. For most people, the ideal time of year to visit the Brazilian Amazon is during the dry season. In particular, the months of July through October. During these months, the weather is more pleasant, with lower humidity and less rainfall, making it easier to explore the city’s attractions and enjoy outdoor activities.

The only downside of visiting during the dry season is that the water levels are much lower, especially at the end of the dry season. This makes it much more difficult to explore deep in the Amazon as these regions aren’t flooded and accessible by canoe. If you want to see the giant lily pads at Janauari Lake, you will want to target the end of the rainy season instead. For travelers who are visiting Manaus to fish on the Amazon River, the best months for you to visit will be between October and February.
