This guide provides all the necessary information to meet the visa, passport, customs, and immunization requirements and recommendations for visiting Brazil and Argentina.

Crossing the Border at Iguazu Falls

If you plan to visit both sides of Iguazu Falls, you must go through immigration when passing from Brazil into Argentina and vice versa. Depending on your nationality, this may mean that you are required to obtain a VISA if you aren’t from a country that is visa-exempt in either of these countries. If you need help determining whether or not you will need a visa, I have linked to my Brazil and Argentina entrance requirement guides above.

Important Note

Starting on April 10, 2025, the country of Brazil will require an e-VISA for passport holders from the United States, Canada, and Australia. This e-VISA can take up to two weeks to process after applying, so you will need to be sure to apply for your VISA well in advance of your trip if you plan on visiting the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls.

Eco-Tourism Tax in Argentina

In addition to passing through immigration when crossing the border, you will also need to account for an eco-tourist tax charged on the Argentinian side of the border. If you are staying in a hotel in Puerto Iguazú, this tax will likely be collected by your hotel and you will be given a receipt that you will need to hold onto. For those who aren’t staying in Argentina, you will need to pay this tax when crossing the border into Argentina.

If you would like to visit both sides of Iguazu Falls without the hassle of having to coordinate all of this on your own, you can also book a tour that visits both sides. With these tours, your tour guide will facilitate the border crossing with immigration while you wait on the tour bus. They will also collect the eco-tourist tax from you if you are staying on the Brazilian side and pay that tax for you.

Outside of knowing the entry and immunization requirements, there is no pre-travel task more important than packing. Don’t worry, I am here to ensure you are packed and prepared for your trip. I have included a link to my Iguazu Falls packing guide for your review below.

How to Tour Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls Tour

When visiting Iguazu Falls, there many different things you will need to consider when deciding how you will tour the falls. Which side of the falls to visit, which accommodations to book, and whether to book a tour are all important factors to consider.

Which Side to Visit

One of the most important decisions you will need to make is which side of the falls you will be visiting. While both the Brazilian and Argentinian sides of the falls are spectacular, they are incredible for different reasons. If you have time to see both sides, I definitely recommend doing so. Otherwise, here are some highlights of both sides of the falls to help you determine which side is the best for you to see.

The Brazilian Side
  • Great panoramic views of the falls.
  • Helicopter rides over the falls.
  • Boat rides that take visitors to see both the Argentinian and Brazilian sides of the falls.
  • Incredible Bird Park.
The Argentinian Side
  • More viewpoints with closer views of the falls. However, far fewer panoramic views than on the Brazilian side.
  • Dramatic overlook of Devil’s Throat.
  • Several different boat ride options. The Ecological Trip takes visitors through the lush rainforest to spot wildlife, whereas the Gran Aventura takes riders to the Macuco Port by Eco-Truck where rafting boats navigate around the falls and reach the Devil’s Throat Canyon.

Where You Stay

Hotel Belmond Das Cataratas at Iguazu Falls
Hotel Belmond Das Cataratas at Iguazu Falls

When visiting Iguazu Falls, where you choose to book your accommodations can also have a factor in how you tour the falls. For those who stay at Grand Melia Iguazu Hotel on the Argentinian side or Hotel Belmond Das Cataratas on the Brazilian side, you will get a special perk when visiting the falls. Those who stay at these hotels are allowed into the parks to tour the falls before the parks open to the public. This allows you to get great photos before the parks get crowded.

Whether to Book a Tour

One of the most important decisions you will need to make when visiting Iguazu Falls is whether or not to book a tour. There isn’t a requirement to use a tour guide when visiting the falls on either side of the border, so you don’t need to book a tour to visit Iguazu Falls. However, using a tour to see the falls can be advantageous for several reasons.

First of all, a tour guide will facilitate the border crossings for you if you plan to see both sides of the falls. This is extremely helpful because it makes it much easier for you and saves you time. In addition, these guides also know where all the best viewpoints are in both Iguaçu National Park in Brazil and Iguazú National Park in Argentina. They can help make sure you don’t miss any of the best viewpoints. Not only that, but they know which spots to visit first because they become crowded.

The final advantage to booking a tour versus visiting the falls on your own is that tours are allowed to stay in the park beyond the time it closes. This means you will have more time to see the falls and will have an opportunity to photograph the falls at the end of the day when the crowds aren’t as big. This can be a huge advantage.

Visiting Iguazu Falls in Argentina

Iguazu Falls, Argentina

With roughly 80 percent of the waterfalls on the Argentinian side of the border, visitors can get a much more intimate look at the falls in Argentina. One of the highlights of visiting the Iguazú National Park in Argentina is the opportunity to explore the extensive network of walkways that lead you right up to the edge of the falls.

The two main circuits of walkways in the park are the Upper Circuit and Lower Circuit. The Upper Circuit runs along the water to the Mbigua Waterfall, where you are treated to great views of Iguazu. There are also several viewpoints of smaller waterfalls along the way. Meanwhile, the Lower Circuit follows the ravine right up to the falls. It’s a physically challenging circuit, but well worth it as the views of the falls are spectacular.

Important Note

Damaged lower circuit walkway in Iguazú National Park
Damaged lower circuit walkway in Iguazú National Park

As of the time this guide was published, the Inferior Circuit (lower circuit) in Argentina’s Iguazú National Park is closed because the walkways were damaged in a storm. Before planning your visit to Iguazu Falls, I would recommend checking TripAdvisor to see if the walkways on this circuit have been prepared. You will get incredible views of the falls regardless, but it is always good to know before visiting.

The most iconic viewpoint, known as the Devil’s Throat, is accessed via the furthest circuit from the park entrance. This Devil’s Throat Circuit provides an exhilarating perspective as you stand just a few meters away from the thundering water. The mist rising from the falls creates a magical atmosphere, often resulting in beautiful rainbows that arch across the sky.

Expert Tip

If you aren’t staying at the Grand Melia Iguazu Hotel with early access to the park, make sure you arrive at the park early. Once they open the park and let you in, immediately head to the train to make sure you get a spot on the first train that departs.

Instead of stopping at the first stop (the Tre Marías Station), get off the train at the last stop (which is near the Devil’s Throat trailhead). After departing the train, immediately head to the Devil’s Throat viewpoint. You will be super glad you got here before the enormous crowds make it difficult to access and photograph this iconic viewpoint.

Boat Tours on the Argentinian Side

The company that operates the boat rides on the Argentinian side is called Iguazu Jungle and they offer three different boat rides to choose from. For your convenience, I have listed a summary of those tours in my Iguazu Falls travel guide below.

  • The Ecological Trip – This is a great option for families with small children or visitors who don’t want to get soaking wet on their boat ride. This tour takes you along the Iguazu River to enjoy the serenity of the forest and the opportunity to spot wildlife.
  • The Gran Aventura – This boat ride is for travel adventurers who want to get close to Iguazu Falls. You will start your adventure with an open truck ride along the iconic Yacaratiá trail. Here, you will get to explore the incredible flora and fauna of the rainforest. Then, you will board boats and speed up the river towards the falls. After enjoying breathtaking views of the falls from the water level, your driver will take you up close and under the falls to feel the power of this amazing natural wonder.
  • Travesía Iguazú – This final boat ride is another great option for visitors who have small children or don’t want to get wet. Unlike the Ecological Tour, this option does include a walk along the Yacaratiá trail to explore the biodiversity of the rainforest. After your hike, you will board your boat to enjoy a gentle ride on the river up until sunset.

Visiting Iguazu Falls in Brazil

Iguazu Falls, Brazil

Although only 20 percent of the falls are on the Brazilian side of the border, there are many advantages to visiting the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls. For starters, the Brazilian side is renowned for its panoramic views, providing a unique opportunity to appreciate the falls in their entirety. With 80 percent of the falls on the other side, you will get a much better impression of just how enormous the Iguazu Falls waterfall system is when looking at it from Brazil.

Touring the Iguacu National Park in Brazil is very straightforward. Shuttle buses will take you to the start of the walkway that takes you down to the river level. Along the way, the walkway provides various viewpoints of the falls. At the end of the walkway is the best viewpoint of them all, which provides the best panoramic views of the Argentinian side of Iguazu Falls. It is at this 360-degree view of the chasm that many of the popular photographs of Iguazu Falls are taken.

The final viewpoint is very close to the falls, so you should be prepared to get wet. Believe me, the views are worth it. When you are finished, there is an elevator that will take you back up to the top. From here, you can choose to visit the incredible Bird Park or take a helicopter ride over Iguazu Falls.

Boat Tours on the Brazilian Side

The company that operates the boat rides on the Argentinian side is called Macuco Safari and they offer a variety of different boating and rafting experiences to choose from. If you are interested, I have listed a summary of those tours in my Iguazu Falls travel guide below.

  • Macuco Safari – This tour is divided into three exhilarating phases: A jungle drive, a hike, and a boat ride. You start with a 2 km ride on an eco-friendly vehicle through the lush jungle of Iguaçu National Park. At the end of your ride, you will be guided on a 600-meter hike through the rainforest as you search for wildlife. Finally, your tour concludes with an incredible boat ride to view the falls up close and to get drenched as your boat goes under the waterfalls.
  • Private Macuco Safari – If you would like to have an exclusive experience for just your group, then you are in luck. Macuco Safari offers a private tour for groups. You get the benefits of no lines, as well as a special kit containing towels, rain coats, and non-alcoholic beverages for your group to enjoy. Finally, Macuco Safari will provide your group with a box lunch at the end of your tour so that you’ll have more time to enjoy the falls.
  • Macuco Rafting Tour – For those who would like a little more adventure, you can choose this incredible tour to get your heart pumping. Along with a specialized and experienced guide, you will take an inflatable raft through the rapids on the Iguaçu River. This roughly 40-minute rafting ride is limited to 10 people to a raft to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants. If you are looking for a unique adventure when visiting Iguazu Falls, this may be what you are looking for.

Helicopter Rides Over the Falls

If seeing Iguazu Falls from the ground isn’t enough, you can always view this spectacular natural wonder from the air. There are helicopter tours available over Iguazu Falls from Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. Even though they are only 10-minute rides, the beauty of the falls from the air will leave you absolutely speechless. If you are interested, I have included several tour options in my Iguazu Falls travel guide below.

Parque das Aves (Bird Park)

One of the other advantages of visiting the Brazilian side of Iguazu Falls is being able to visit the incredible Parque das Aves. This amazing bird park is one of the largest in Latin America and protects over 120 different species of birds from the Atlantic Forest. Tours of the park typically last between 1-2 hours and include easy walking on well-maintained trails that access the aviaries where the birds are kept. It’s a fun family activity that bird lovers are certain to enjoy.

Visitors can expect to encounter various animals, from colorful birds like toucans and parrots to playful coatis and capuchin monkeys.

It is important to remember that the wildlife you may see in the park is wild. Do not attempt to approach the animals or feed them. In fact, some of the wildlife like the coatis can become quite aggressive when food is present and may bite. These animals are known to carry rabies, so you don’t want to be bitten by one. Please, keep your distance and respect the space of the wildlife you encounter.
