On our second day in Iceland, we departed Reykjavík to explore the Golden Circle. This is one of the most iconic routes in Iceland and has been on my travel bucket list for quite some time. At the heart of this route lies Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases the dramatic rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

As we wandered through the park’s stunning landscapes, we were mesmerized by the beauty. The park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a plethora of hiking trails that cater to all skill levels. One of our favorite sights that we saw in the park was the iconic Öxarárfoss waterfall. It is one of many incredible waterfalls that Iceland is famous for.
Continuing along the Golden Circle, we explored the amazing Geysir Geothermal Area. Here, the ground bubbles and steams, with Strokkur geyser erupting every few minutes, shooting boiling water high into the air. The vibrant colors of the mineral-rich hot springs and the surrounding geothermal features create a surreal landscape that feels otherworldly.

The final highlight that we saw during our exploration of the Golden Circle was the magnificent Gullfoss Waterfall. Known as the “Golden Falls,” Gullfoss is a two-tiered waterfall that creates a stunning spectacle, especially when sunlight hits the mist, creating rainbows that dance in the air. The roar of the water and the sheer power of the falls left us in absolute awe.
That’s it for today’s Iceland travel update. Tomorrow we will begin our drive around Iceland on the Ring Road. This is one of the world’s most iconic road trips and one of the most popular adventures for adventure travelers. Until then, I have included a gallery of some of the amazing photos that I was able to capture of the Golden Circle below.
