Today we started our drive on Iceland’s infamous Ring Road. The first area that we will be exploring along this iconic route is the incredible Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Often referred to as “Iceland in Miniature,” it is a captivating destination that showcases the diverse beauty of the country. This remarkable region is home to a stunning array of landscapes, from dramatic volcanic craters and rugged coastlines to serene fishing villages and lush green valleys.

At the heart of the peninsula lies the iconic Snæfellsjökull glacier, a dormant volcano that towers majestically over the surrounding terrain. This glacier, which inspired Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” is not only a natural wonder but also a significant cultural symbol for the Icelandic people. We explored numerous trails in the area that led to some breathtaking viewpoints.
The peninsula is also home to the iconic Kirkjufell Mountain, which is often referred to as the most photographed mountain in Iceland. Its distinctive, pyramid-like shape rises dramatically from the surrounding landscape, creating a stunning backdrop for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. The mountain is flanked by the picturesque Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall, where we were able to capture breathtaking images of cascading water against the striking silhouette of the peak.

Another remarkable site on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is the Black Church of Budir, a striking contrast to the vibrant landscapes that surround it. This historic church, known as Búðakirkja, is painted a deep black, which makes it stand out against the lush green fields and the dramatic backdrop of the Snæfellsjökull glacier. Built in 1987, the church is a modern structure that pays homage to the traditional Icelandic style, and it has become a popular spot for both locals and tourists seeking a moment of reflection or a unique photo opportunity.
We also enjoyed visiting the charming towns of Arnarstapi and Hellnar, where traditional Icelandic architecture meets stunning coastal scenery. The cliffs along this stretch are adorned with unique rock formations and teeming with birdlife, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. The area is also rich in folklore, with tales of elves and trolls woven into the fabric of the landscape, adding an enchanting layer to your exploration.
We took the time to explore some of the coastal paths, where we got to see the powerful Atlantic waves crashing against the rocks. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is chock-full of breathtaking views, so we are glad we made time to include it on our itinerary. If you are interested in seeing some of the photos I took today, I have included a gallery for you to review below. Tomorrow we continue our Ring Road adventure. Until then, safe travels!
