Northeast Iceland Travel: Discover Natural Wonders

Today, we completed our trip across Iceland and will finish our exploration of the northern part of the country. Northeast Iceland is a treasure trove of natural wonders, and it certainly did not disappoint. One of our favorite spots that we visited in our explorations of the area was the incredible Arctic Henge. This monumental structure, inspired by ancient Norse mythology, is designed to align with the sun’s movements, creating a mystical atmosphere that draws visitors from around the globe.

Another highlight of the day for us was visiting the awe-inspiring Dettifoss Waterfall, renowned for being one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. With a staggering drop of 44 meters and a width of 100 meters, the sheer force of the water cascading into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon is a sight to behold. The surrounding landscape, characterized by rugged cliffs and lush greenery, enhances the dramatic effect of the waterfall.

There were numerous trails around the falls that we hiked to explore the breathtaking falls from different vantage points. I have been privileged enough to see some of the world’s most iconic falls, and Dettifoss certainly ranks up there in both beauty and power.

After exploring the falls, we made the short drive over to Stuðlagil Canyon. This hidden gem in Northeast Iceland showcases the beauty of basalt columns and turquoise waters. While it is lesser-known, it was one of our favorite stops of the day. It offers a more tranquil experience, where you can hike along the riverbanks and marvel at the striking geological formations that have been shaped by centuries of volcanic activity.

Finally, we capped off the day with a stop at the incredible Hengifoss Waterfall. Cascading down a cliff adorned with vibrant red strata, it is definitely one of the more unique and beautiful falls that I have seen. The hike to Hengifoss was equally rewarding, as it takes you through picturesque landscapes filled with wildflowers and dramatic cliffs, culminating in the breathtaking view of the waterfall itself.

That’s it for my daily Iceland travel update. If you would like to see some of the beautiful photos that I was able to capture today, I have included a gallery for you to view below. Tomorrow we head south as we make our way back towards Reykjavík. Until then, safe travels!
