Today, we start the home stretch on our Iceland Ring Road adventure. After spending yesterday exploring the East Fjords, today we headed into Southeast Iceland to explore some of the country’s most beautiful scenery. One of my very favorite stops today was at the incredible Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. This magnificent canyon, carved by glacial meltwater over thousands of years, features steep, moss-covered walls that rise dramatically from the river below.

We spent a good amount of time exploring the winding paths along the canyon’s edge, admiring the stunning panoramic views of the lush landscape and the serpentine river that flows through it. The vibrant greens of the moss juxtaposed with the stark rock formations created a mesmerizing visual experience.
Another favorite stop of ours in Southeast Iceland was at the iconic Diamond Beach. This gorgeous beach is renowned for its striking contrast of black sand and glistening icebergs. Located near the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, the beach had scattered chunks of ice washed up on its shore. It was breathtaking to see in person.

However, the incredible views didn’t stop there. We were also able to view the spectacular Svartifoss Waterfall, which is famous for its unique basalt column formations that resemble organ pipes. Nestled within Vatnajökull National Park, the waterfall cascades down a cliff surrounded by dark, hexagonal basalt columns, creating a striking contrast against the white water.
Finally, we got to enjoy the nearby Mulagljufur Canyon, which offered more breathtaking vistas. The dramatic cliffs of the canyon, carved by the winding river, created a scene of unmatched beauty that I will certainly never forget. All in all, it was another incredible day on Iceland’s famed Ring Road. Tomorrow, we continue our drive back west as we finish off this incredible road trip. Until then, safe travels!
