Southwest Iceland Travel: Best Stops on the Ring Road

Like they say, all good things must come to an end. Today was the last day of our incredible Ring Road adventure. However, we may have saved the best for last as Southwest Iceland certainly delivered. One of our favorite stops during the day was to the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. This stunning beach is renowned for its dramatic black sands, which contrast beautifully with the white surf of the Atlantic Ocean.

Not only that, but towering basalt columns rise majestically from the shore, creating a striking backdrop that has captivated photographers and nature lovers alike. As we strolled down the beach, we were mesmerized by the impressive Reynisdrangar sea stacks, which are steeped in local folklore. I don’t know that I have ever seen a more stunning beach in my life.

Another highlight of the day was the magnificent Skogafoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s largest and most iconic waterfalls. With a drop of 60 meters, Skogafoss creates a breathtaking spectacle as it cascades down the cliffs, often producing rainbows on sunny days. We climbed the staircase that leads to an observation platform at the top and enjoyed the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the river below.

The area around the waterfall is rich in history, as it is said to be the hiding place of treasure buried by the Viking king, Þrasi. The combination of natural beauty and intriguing legends makes Skogafoss a captivating stop on any Icelandic adventure.

However, the highlight of the day for me was undoubtedly the Katla Ice Cave tour that we took. This experience was like no other I have had in my travels, as we were able to go into the heart of a glacier. The cave’s stunning blue ice formations and intricate patterns create a surreal atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly.

Finally, to wind down our day, we made stops at the incredible Keldur and Laxabakki Turf Houses to get a glimpse into Iceland’s architectural heritage. These traditional turf houses, with their grass-covered roofs, showcase the ingenuity of early Icelandic settlers who adapted to the harsh climate. We are tired, but are hearts are so full of the wonderful memories we have made on this incredible Iceland adventure.
