If you have always wanted to see the Northern Lights, but you haven’t had the opportunity, this weekend you might be in luck. The best part is, you might not have to go anywhere to see them. According to NASA, a solar storm is set to hit the Earth this weekend and it may give those of us who live further South the best chance to see the Northern Lights in a long time.
Where Will They Be Visible
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting that the Northern Lights will be visible as far south as Chicago this weekend. If you look at the map above, the Northern Lights are predicted to be visible everywhere North of the line that is drawn on the map. This is much further South than the Northern Lights are typically visible.
Instructions for Best Viewing
If you would like to see the Northern Lights this weekend, your best opportunity is likely going to be in the early morning hours on Saturday. For more information on what to look for and where to look, CNET.com has a really great article on the solar storm and its impact on the Northern Lights this weekend that you should review.
As I am situated in Milwaukee, I will definitely be up early on Saturday to try and view and photograph the Northern Lights if I see them. If you are able to get some great shots of the lights, I would love to see the photographs! Good luck everyone!
I am excited for seeing this. It will be my first time experience and lucky enough to fall in Northern part. Thank you for sharing this. https://travelandhikewithpcos.com/
My first time too! You are very welcome! 😀👍
Oh crud, I missed it! I’m just reading this now (on Saturday afternoon). Did you see them?
I didn’t see anything this morning. Early tomorrow they are supposed to be most visible so you didn’t miss the window 😀👍
