Colonia, Uruguay Travel Log: Explore the Charming Beauty

After spending a few days exploring the beautiful city of Buenos Aires, I took a short trip to Uruguay today to see the amazing city of Colonia. Nestled along the banks of the serene Río de la Plata, this quant colonial settlement is renowned for its picturesque cobblestone streets, pastel-hued buildings, and abundance of architectural gems from the Portuguese and Spanish eras. In this Colonia, Uruguay travel log, I share some of my favorite parts of this beautiful city with you.

Colonia, Uruguay Travel

If you haven’t been following along with my South American travel adventure, I am spending two weeks traveling through Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. For more information on my trip, please check out my trip planning article that I linked to below.

Exploring Beautiful Colonia

My day started with an early alarm clock as visiting Colonia required a ferry ride across the bay from Buenos Aires to Uruguay. Upon arriving in Colonia, I wandered through the historic quarter and was delighted by the beautiful mix of both Portuguese and Spanish influences in the colorful buildings and quaint plazas that dot the area.

One of my favorite parts of the visit was seeing the iconic lighthouse, which stands as a beacon of the city’s maritime heritage. Climbing to the top offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, where the river meets the horizon. If you visit and have more time, the city is also home to some wonderful museums, such as the Portuguese Museum and the Municipal Museum. I didn’t have time to tour the museums, but I did check out several delightful artisan shops.

The city is also widely recognized for its amazing culinary scene. Visitors can savor traditional Uruguayan dishes in charming local cafes and restaurants throughout the city. The local cuisine, heavily influenced by the region’s agricultural bounty, features mouthwatering grilled meats, fresh seafood, and delectable pastries. As the sun set, I ended my wonderful Colonia, Uruguay travel excursion and boarded a ferry back to Buenos Aires.
