Baby Elephant in Kruger National Park
Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa
When it comes to wildlife travel encounters, there is nothing that I like more than seeing a baby animal in the wild. In addition to being incredibly cute, like baby human beings, other baby animals represent all that is good and innocent in the world. When I was in Africa this month, I was fortunate enough to see a lot of baby animals while on safari. While they were all absolutely adorable, my favorite encounter was with a very young elephant calf that we saw in the Balule Nature Reserve in the Greater Kruger National Park area in South Africa.
One of the things that I absolutely love about Kruger National Park is that the animals seem to be a lot less stressed than the animals that you will see elsewhere in Africa. Whether this is because they are under less pressure from poachers or other stresses, I don’t know, but the fact that they seemed more relaxed allowed us to have some truly spectacular wildlife encounters. While elephants I have encountered elsewhere in Africa would run or huddle around their young calves, we were able to watch this little one play for half an hour or more.
What is your favorite baby animal encounter that you have had in your travels?
