When preparing for a trip to Niagara Falls, it’s essential to pack thoughtfully to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. By preparing thoughtfully and considering both the practical and leisure aspects of your trip, you can ensure that your visit to the falls is not only memorable but also stress-free. In this Niagara Falls packing guide, I outline all of the information you will need to be sure you are prepared when packing for your trip.

Keep in mind, conditions in the Niagara Falls area can vary significantly throughout the year. In the summer months, lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and a hat are crucial to protect against the sun while exploring the outdoor attractions. Conversely, if you’re visiting in the fall or winter, layering becomes key; pack warm clothing, including thermal layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy boots to navigate the chilly, often wet environment.
For the purposes of this Niagara Falls packing guide, I am going to assume you will be visiting during the warmer months of the year. However, if you do plan on visiting the falls during the winter, early spring, or late autumn, you will need to be sure to add some warm weather gear to your packing list.

General Packing Guidelines

Before diving into the details of clothing and other essentials in this Niagara Falls packing guide, I’d like to share some general packing advice. These suggestions are crucial as they will help you effectively prioritize what to include in your luggage and what to leave behind.
Prepare to Get Wet
One thing that often gets overlooked by visitors to Niagara Falls is the fact that you are almost guaranteed to get wet when doing certain things. Even if it doesn’t rain during your visit, the Maid of the Mist boat tour and the walkways for the Cave of the Winds tour get you very close to the falls. When getting this close, there are very large clouds of mist that can get you a lot wetter than you would imagine. If you have valuables that can’t get wet, you need to have a plan for keeping these items dry.
When I visited Niagara Falls, I wore my swimsuit when visiting with a breathable t-shirt, a breathable long-sleeve shirt, and a hat. In my backpack, I had a pair of long pants that I could change into in the evening and a pair of sandals that I wore when on the walkways and the boat tour. Otherwise, the rest of the time I was touring the falls, I wore my walking shoes.
Sun Protection is Important
Because of its location on the border of the United States and Canada, many people overlook the need for sun protection when visiting Niagara Falls. That is a mistake, as it can get quite hot and the sun can be surprisingly intense during the summer months. Chances are, you will be spending a lot of time outdoors when touring the falls area, so you will need to have a good SPF sun block to protect yourself.
Not only is sun block important, but keeping yourself hydrated so that you don’t get heat stroke is important as well. In some places, there isn’t a ton of shade, so having water with you to make sure you stay safe and hydrated is important. This is why I also recommend packing a good hat with you when you visit so that you can make sure your face and neck have some extra protection.
Keep Your Passport With You
To get the most out of your visit to Niagara Falls, you will want to visit the falls on both sides of the border. To do this, you will need to have your passport with you. When packing for your trip, you will need to have a way to keep your passport safe and dry during your visit.
That’s why I have included recommendations for bringing a fanny pack or backpack, as well as a small dry bag to keep your valuables dry. While these pieces of gear are helpful on trips like this in general, they are especially critical when they are being used to protect valuable belongings like your passport.
Choosing the Right Bag to Bring

Before you begin packing for your trip to Niagara Falls, it’s important to determine what kind of bag you’ll take. The ideal bag selection largely depends on your other travel destinations, the duration of your trip, and your planned activities. In this packing guide for Niagara Falls, I will discuss the three most favored bag options and the scenarios in which each is most suitable.
Roller Bag Suitcase

One of the most frequently used bags among travelers today is the roller bag. With wheels attached, these bags are simple to navigate through airports, hotel lobbies, train stations, and various other locations. This convenience makes roller bags a top choice for many. Besides being incredibly easy to carry, they come in different sizes and usually offer more space than other luggage options available.
Moreover, many modern roller bags feature advanced functionalities that enhance the travel experience. Features such as separate compartments, piggyback clips (which allow you to attach an additional bag), expandable zippers, TSA-approved locks, and waterproof materials are just a few of the fantastic attributes found in today’s roller bags.
If your travel plans don’t include a trip to a remote area in upstate New York or Ontario, a roller bag is likely the perfect choice for your journey. However, if you intend to camp in a more secluded spot, you may want to consider one of the alternative bag types discussed in this guide instead.

Duffle Bag

Another type of bag you can choose for your trip is the classic duffel bag. Although these bags are not as easy to carry around as roller bags, they offer certain benefits for specific types of trips. Most importantly, they are significantly more adaptable than a standard roller bag, allowing for easier fitting into tighter spaces.
If you’re planning a visit to Niagara Falls as part of a larger road trip with limited trunk space, using a duffel bag can be a beneficial option. This is especially true if you intend to camp in remote areas and need to bring along camping gear and other supplies, as maximizing space in your vehicle is essential. A flexible duffel bag simplifies this kind of travel.
However, on the downside, these bags do not come with the handy features that most roller bags provide, such as security features and separate compartments. Therefore, unless space-saving is a priority for your vehicle, a roller bag would be the more suitable choice.

Travel Backpack

The last type of bag I want to discuss in this Niagara Falls packing guide is the travel backpack. Although these bags usually lack the storage capacity of the other bag types I’ve mentioned, they offer several important benefits. For travelers visiting Niagara Falls as part of an extended journey to various locations, these bags are perfect for such adventures.
Travel backpacks are well-suited for these scenarios because they are the most straightforward, economical, and convenient option for traveling between multiple destinations. They are not only easy to carry, but they can often be taken on flights, making them a very budget-friendly choice. In case it wasn’t obvious, this is why backpackers carry backpacks when they travel.
However, if your plan is to visit only Niagara Falls or just a few places, these bags might not be the best fit for you. Generally, you can’t fit as much in them compared to a traditional roller bag or even a duffel. Additionally, packing and unpacking these travel backpacks can take a bit more time. Still, for an extensive trip covering many different locations, travel backpacks remain the top choice.

Clothes to Pack for Niagara Falls

This Niagara Falls packing guide references products on my Amazon Store site. I may receive a commission when you purchase these products from my store, though at no additional cost to you. I hand-pick and recommend only products I am familiar with or comfortable recommending.
One of the key pieces of advice I can offer in this Niagara Falls packing guide is regarding the clothing I suggest you take along. Ultimately, the attire you choose will significantly impact your comfort and safety throughout your journey. I understand that men and women typically have distinct requirements, which is why I’ve divided my recommended clothing list into separate sections for men and women below.
Clothes for Men
In addition to having visited Niagara Falls on both the Canadian and American sides, I have also traveled to many of the other large waterfalls in the world. This includes the amazing Iguazu Falls in South America and the iconic Victoria Falls in Africa. During these travels, I have learned some hard lessons on my own and from others on what clothes men should pack when visiting these destinations. I have compiled a list of the important items I recommend packing in this Niagara Falls packing guide below.
Keep in mind that I didn’t list some of the essential items for any trip, such as underwear. I also didn’t include the quantity of items to pack, as that depends a great deal on the length of your trip. Hopefully, this list will help you pack the essential items that you will need to keep you comfortable on your trip.

Another smart piece of clothing to pack when visiting Niagara Falls is moisture-wicking t-shirts. The combination of mist from the falls and outdoor activities can lead to a sweaty experience, making these shirts ideal for keeping you dry and comfortable. Their breathable fabric helps regulate body temperature, allowing you to fully enjoy the breathtaking views and adventures without the discomfort of damp clothing. Embracing this practical clothing option ensures that you can focus on the beauty of the falls rather than on your attire. |

Bringing a swimsuit to Niagara Falls is essential for fully enjoying the experience. Rain Jacket or Rain Poncho

Bringing your own rain jacket or poncho to Niagara Falls is a smart choice, even though the boat tours provide ponchos for their passengers. The provided ponchos can be thin and may not offer adequate protection against the heavy mist and splashes from the falls. Having your own rain gear ensures you stay dry and comfortable throughout your visit, allowing you to fully enjoy the breathtaking views without worrying about getting soaked. In addition, the weather in the area can be unpredictable, so having a good rain jacket or poncho in case of bad weather is a good idea as well. |

Versatile Sandals
![]() |
Another essential piece of clothing you will want to pack when visiting Niagara Falls is a good pair of versatile sandals. Having a good pair of strapped sandals is important because the terrain around the falls can be slippery due to mist and water, making it easy to lose your footing in loose footwear. Good sandals with straps provide better grip and stability, ensuring that you can navigate the wet surfaces with confidence while also keeping you comfortable when your feet get wet on the boats and walkways. |

The last piece of clothing that I recommend packing when you visit Niagara Falls is a good hat. The mist from the falls can create a refreshing atmosphere, but it can also lead to unexpected sun exposure, especially on warm days. A hat not only provides shade, helping to keep you cool, but it also protects your face and eyes from harmful UV rays. I suggest packing one that you don’t mind getting wet as it will be fairly unavoidable when you get near the falls. |

Even though the boat tours on both sides of the border provide rain ponchos, you woul dbe wise to bring your own rain jacket or poncho with you when you visit Niagara Falls. The ponchos they provide can be quite flimsy and might not give sufficient protection against the intense mist and splashes from the falls. Having your own rain gear guarantees that you remain dry and comfortable during your visit, enabling you to fully appreciate the stunning views without the concern of getting drenched. Moreover, the weather in the region can be unpredictable, so it’s prudent to have a dependable rain jacket or poncho on hand in case of bad weather. |

Comfortable Walking Shoes

When visiting Niagara Falls, having a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential. The area offers numerous trails and viewpoints that require a fair amount of walking, and the last thing you want is sore feet to detract from the breathtaking scenery. Good footwear not only enhances your comfort but also allows you to explore the natural beauty of the falls without any hindrance. Additionally, the terrain around Niagara Falls can be uneven and slippery, especially near the water’s edge. A sturdy pair of walking shoes provides the necessary support and grip, ensuring your safety as you navigate the various paths. |

The last item I suggest you pack for your trip to Niagara Falls is a reliable pair of versatile sandals.
