To properly appreciate the grandeur and beauty of the falls, you will want to view them from both sides of the border. This means that you will need to pass through customs and immigration when traveling between the two countries.
In addition to needing a valid passport that is valid for the duration of your trip, you will also need to review the customs and currency requirements for both countries. You will also need to review the current health regulations and vaccination recommendations for both the United States and Canada to ensure that you meet all of the entry requirements for both countries. To start, there are various viewpoints, including the famed Skylon Tower and the Niagara Falls Observation Tower, from which to see the falls. These different viewpoints give you a wide range of perspectives from which to admire the beauty and power of the falls.
Meanwhile, there is no shortage of adventure activities to enjoy in the area as well. Zip lines, boat tours up to the falls, and other activities will keep even the hardest-to-impress adventure seekers happy. For those who have small children, the amazing Clifton Hills area has a variety of attractions that are certain to delight the little ones.

One of the very best ways to experience the beauty of Niagara Falls is to take a boat ride to the falls. There is no place at Niagara Falls for you to get closer to the falls than this. Suspended high above the swirling waters of the Niagara River, this cable car glides gracefully over the powerful whirlpool, providing an exhilarating experience that combines adventure with stunning views. The Aero Car, designed in the 1910s, has become a beloved part of the Niagara experience, allowing guests to appreciate the sheer force of nature from a vantage point that few other attractions can match.
As the Aero Car traverses its 1,000-foot span, riders learn about the falls from knowledgeable guides. The ride itself lasts approximately 20 minutes, during which the gentle sway of the car adds to the thrill of being suspended above the churning waters. How to Get to Niagara Falls
How you get to Niagara Falls will depend a great deal on where you are visiting from. For most travelers, flying into the area will be the most convenient way to visit. If you are planning to fly, the closest international airport is Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) on the American side. From there, it is a roughly 30-mile drive to Niagara Falls.
You can also fly into Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) on the Canadian side, but it’s a longer drive, about 78 miles to the falls. For those visiting from within the United States or Canada and planning to drive, I have included a map and table below that outline the average drive times to Niagara Falls from various cities and places of interest in the area.

One of the most important decisions you must make when planning your trip to Niagara Falls is when to visit. Like most places, certain times of year are better than others. Average Temperature (°F)
The average temperatures at Niagara Falls differ significantly throughout the year. In the winter months, from December to February, the region can be quite frigid, with average temperatures often dipping below freezing. During this time, the falls can take on a stunning icy appearance, creating a breathtaking winter landscape.
As spring arrives, temperatures begin to rise, typically ranging from the mid-30s to the mid-60s Fahrenheit. This transitional season brings a refreshing change, with blooming flowers and budding trees enhancing the scenery. The mild weather makes it an ideal time for outdoor activities, such as hiking and sightseeing, allowing tourists to fully appreciate the natural wonder of Niagara Falls.
Summer months, particularly June through August, see the warmest temperatures, often reaching the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit. This peak tourist season attracts large crowds, as families and adventurers alike seek to experience the falls in all their glory. As autumn approaches, temperatures gradually cool, with averages in the 50s and 60s. The fall foliage creates a stunning backdrop, making it a picturesque time to visit Niagara Falls.
Average Precipitation (Inches)
On average, the region receives about 36 inches of precipitation annually, which includes both rain and snow. The distribution of this precipitation is not uniform, with the summer months typically seeing the highest levels. During this season, thunderstorms are common, often bringing heavy downpours that can dramatically increase the water levels of the falls, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
In contrast, the winter months can be quite different, as temperatures drop and snowfall becomes more prevalent. The area can receive significant snowfall, sometimes accumulating several feet, which can create a stunning winter landscape around the falls. Spring and autumn present a transitional phase in terms of precipitation patterns.
In spring, the melting snow and increased rainfall lead to a surge in water flow, enhancing the falls’ grandeur. Conversely, autumn often brings a mix of rain and cooler temperatures, with the vibrant foliage adding to the scenic beauty of the area.
Best Months to Visit Niagara Falls
While Niagara Falls is amazing to see year-round, the time of year you plan your visit can significantly impact your experience. For instance, the months of late spring and early fall are often regarded as the most favorable times to explore this natural wonder. From May to June, the weather is typically mild, and the falls are surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant blooms. Plus, the crowds aren’t as big yet, so you won’t have to wait in line for views.
As summer approaches, July and August bring warmer temperatures and bigger crowds. This peak season attracts a larger number of tourists, which can lead to longer wait times for popular activities and attractions. However, the summer months also offer a variety of events and festivals, including fireworks displays and concerts. Another positive about visiting during the summer is that the falls are typically at their strongest, which is amazing to see.
As summer fades, the weather remains pleasant, with temperatures gradually cooling down, making it ideal for outdoor exploration. During September and October, the fall foliage transforms the landscape into a stunning array of reds, oranges, and yellows. However, as fall ends and winter sets in, the area turns into a wintery wonderland. While the blanket of snow is beautiful, it makes viewing the falls far less impressive. That’s why I recommend not visiting during the winter months of December through February.
Where to Stay in Niagara Falls
One of the most important decisions you are going to have to make when planning your trip to Niagara Falls is where you will stay. When you travel, the accommodations you choose are often among the biggest expenditures for your trip.
So, not only do you need to be comfortable where you are staying, but you also need to be comfortable with how much you are paying to stay there. Finding the right accommodations for your trip involves looking at the amenities, the location, and most importantly, the price.
