Where to Start and End This Road Trip

Where you decide to start and end this Great Lakes road trip itinerary ultimately depends on where you are coming from. Each of the major American cities listed below is along the route of this itinerary and has a major international airport.
If you are visiting from outside the United States, you can fly into any one of these cities and rent a car to use on your trip. For those who are visiting from inside the United States, where you start and end your trip ultimately depends on whether you already live in the Midwest or whether you plan to drive or fly into the area to take this road trip.
When to Plan Your Great Lakes Road Trip

Planning a Great Lakes road trip is an exciting endeavor, and timing can significantly enhance the experience. The ideal time to embark on this journey is during the late spring to early fall months, specifically from May to September. During this period, the weather is generally mild and pleasant, making it perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and exploring the picturesque shorelines.
Spring (March through May)
Spring brings mild weather, blooming landscapes, and comfortable conditions for exploring parks, trails, and lakeshore viewpoints. It’s also far less crowded than summer, so places like Mackinac Island, Niagara Falls, and Pictured Rocks feel quieter and more personal, giving you a closer connection to nature and the region’s highlights.
Summer (June through August)
Summer—especially July and August—brings peak crowds and a lively atmosphere filled with festivals, art fairs, music events, and food celebrations that showcase the region’s culture. It’s the busiest time of year, so planning ahead helps you avoid congestion and make the most of your trip. Visiting popular spots early in the morning or later in the afternoon usually offers a calmer experience with fewer people around.
Autumn (September through November)
As summer fades into fall, September and October offer an excellent window for a Great Lakes road trip. Brilliant foliage makes lakeside drives especially scenic, and with families back in school, the region feels quieter and more relaxed.
Autumn also brings plenty of local celebrations—from apple picking in Michigan to harvest festivals in Wisconsin. Craft fairs and farmers’ markets showcase the area’s agricultural heritage, giving travelers a chance to enjoy seasonal treats and pick up handmade goods.
Winter (December through February)
Winter is the least ideal time for a Great Lakes road trip. Harsh weather brings icy roads, heavy snowfall, and difficult driving conditions, while snow often obscures the scenic views that make the region so appealing. Many attractions also close or reduce hours, and parks, restaurants, and hotels may offer limited services, leaving fewer options for activities, dining, and lodging.
What to Pack for a Great Lakes Road Trip

Before heading out on your Great Lakes road trip adventure, ensure you have packed the necessary clothing and gear. The weather in the Great Lakes region can vary significantly from day to day, so it’s essential to pack layers of clothing.
In addition, you will want to make sure you have the proper footwear for hiking and a swimsuit for the many different water activities you can enjoy in the region. For more tips on what clothing and gear I recommend packing, please refer to the packing guides I linked to below.
