If you’ve ever camped in the mountains or spent a night by the lakeside during winter, you know that it is not just a slight inconvenience; the cold can be what makes or breaks your trip. And then when the weather changes, and the temperature goes down sharply, suddenly that cozy-looking tent can feel like an icebox.
Camping in 2025 involves immersing yourself in nature while leveraging innovative, eco-conscious gear to elevate your outdoor adventure. Whether you’re embarking on a solo escape, a family camping trip, or a wilderness adventure with friends, being well-prepared is essential.
When I first started to get into backcountry hiking and backpacking, my family thought I was absolutely crazy. Actually, some of them still do. Each year, there are media reports of unfortunate hikers who run into trouble in the backcountry and are either lost, injured, or tragically perish. I have explained to my family that, while even seasoned and prepared hikers do sometimes have accidents in the backcountry, a majority of the tragic stories you read about concern hikers who enter the backcountry unprepared.
For those who like to hike, back country backpacking can be such an exciting and awe-inspiring endeavor. There is something about being alone in the wilderness that can really help you get to know yourself and this beautiful world that we live in. However, as incredible and moving as backcountry backpacking can be, it can also be a very challenging proposition for those who are unprepared.
When it comes to the world’s incredible coastlines, most of the attention goes to the breathtaking ocean coastlines that are found throughout the world. Places like the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, the Great Ocean Road in Australia, and the Big Sur coastline in the American state of California get a lot of attention from travelers. I have visited all of these coastlines in my many travelers, and I can personally attest to their incredible beauty. However, when searching out the world’s most amazing coastlines, I think that the Great Lakes region of North America is often mistakenly overlooked. Between the seven Great Lakes of North America, there is some absolutely stunning stretches of coastline for travelers to enjoy. Destinations like the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior and Turnip Rock in Lake Huron are stunning coastlines that rival any ocean coast you will find in the world. However, my favorite is undoubtedly the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Lake Superior.
The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of the most beautiful places in the Midwestern United States if not all of North America. Tourists flock to this stretch of the Lake Superior shoreline each year to do some kayaking, hiking and enjoy the beautiful landscapes. However, each year I see tourists arrive at Pictured Rocks completely unprepared.
