Eastern National Parks Road Trip Itinerary

Over the course of a week, I drove a loop itinerary through several remarkable parks in the eastern United States. My eastern national parks road trip ended up covering just under two thousand miles and required nearly thirty hours of driving. Breaking the drive into manageable segments was essential, and I recommend future travelers do the same. If you’re planning something similar, map out your days carefully so you can enjoy the parks without feeling rushed.

Mammoth Cave National Park

My first stop on the eastern national parks road trip was Mammoth Cave National Park —a place I had visited briefly years ago but never fully explored. This time, I finally had the chance to dive deeper into the world’s longest known cave system. The guided cave tour was absolutely worth it, and the surrounding trails offered peaceful, forested hikes that balanced out the underground adventure. If you go, book your cave tour early; they fill up fast.

New River Gorge National Park

Next, I headed to America’s newest national park: New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia. Since earning national park status in 2020, it has become a haven for hikers, climbers, and whitewater enthusiasts. One of the most memorable experiences of my entire trip was the bridge walk beneath the iconic New River Gorge Bridge. Walking along the catwalk with sweeping views of the gorge was both thrilling and surprisingly serene. For anyone planning a visit, the New River Gorge Bridge Walk is a must.

Shenandoah National Park

After leaving New River Gorge, I made my way to Shenandoah National Park. This park quickly became one of my favorites in the East, thanks to its endless viewpoints and lush mountain trails. Driving Skyline Drive was a highlight, but the real adventure came with the Old Rag Mountain hike. This class 3 route involved technical rock scrambling and rewarded me with some of the best views of the entire trip. If you plan to hike Old Rag, secure your permit early and be prepared for a long, challenging day.

The final stop on my eastern national parks road trip was Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio. I visited on my way home, and it turned out to be the perfect finale. The park’s waterfalls, forested paths, and peaceful river views offered a refreshing contrast to the rugged mountain landscapes earlier in the week. It’s an underrated gem and a great way to wind down after days of intense hiking.
