Even though the name “Madrid” might be over 2,200 years old, the city of Madrid has only been the capital city of Spain since the 16th Century. In the time between then and now, Madrid has grown to not only be the largest city in Spain, it is also the third largest city in the European Union. In addition to being one of the largest of Europe’s cities, it is also the continent’s suniest. There are more days of sunshine in Madrid than any place else in Europe. Madrid is also considered to be one of the cultural capitals of the European Union. This would explain why the city is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, if not the whole world.

Bruges instantly charms visitors with its canals, medieval streets, and beautifully preserved architecture. The city feels like a living postcard, blending quiet corners with grand historic sights, and it’s easy to see why so many travelers consider it a must‑visit. My trip to the American West and Southwest is fast approaching and I have been very busy putting together a detailed itinerary for our trip. There are no flights or hotels involved in this trip, so you would think the planning process would be easier. On the contrary, I have found that the logistics of planning a cross-country camping road trip are even more complex than planning your typical fly-and-stay vacation. Add to that the complexities of the COVID-19 situation and it has been a very interesting travel planning exercise.
